Solar panels going down

June 1st, 2008

I read with much interest in the FT whilst waiting for our plane in Los Angeles that solar panels are going to drop in price this year. The reason being that for the first time they are being overproduced.

The article went on to say that the price of panels would be expected to get closer to the target of 1.00 dollar per watt. Current prices are about $3.40 a watt and are set to halve within a year.

Great news for us who are planning an Earthship build

Thick, heat absorbant rubber that stack in piles at mosts dumps - tyres are ideal for insulation and their size and shape make for solid construction using centre stutts to mesh them together.

Solar Energy

May 21st, 2008

Solar energy is energy from the Sun in the form of radiated heat and light. It drives the climate and weather and supports life on Earth. Solar energy technologies make controlled use of this energy resource.

Solar power is a synonym of solar energy or refers specifically to the conversion of sunlight into electricity by photovoltaics, concentrating solar thermal devices or various experimental technologies.

A solar panel is a device that collects and converts solar energy into electricity or heat which can be used by (for example) nearby buildings. Solar photovoltaic panels can be made so that the sun’s energy excites the atoms in a silicon layer between two protector panels. Electrons from these excited atoms form an electric current, which can be used by external devices. Solar panels were in use over one hundred years ago for water heating in homes. Solar panels can also be made with a specially shaped mirror that concentrates light onto a tube of oil. The oil then heats up, and travels through a vat of water, instantly boiling it. The steam created turns a turbine for power.
