About this site

My name is Stewart Harding

In 2005 I moved to Nelspruit South Africa to be closer to my family in Swaziland.I had always promised myself that I would one day build a sustainable dwelling for my family in the Earthship style of maverick architect Mike Reynolds.2007 proved to be a busy year with many 2010 world cup projects injecting a much needed boost into the South African economies. I decided after 2010 to begin in earnest building my sustainable dwelling in the rolling hills of Swaziland.February 2008 the Energy crisis tightened and South Africa has daily load shedding leaving many homes and businesses without electricity, Escom announced that a 166% increase in power charges will be made later in the year, the cost of petrol and diesel has doubled in a little over a year and world food shortages are reported in every news paper.I woke up to the sudden acceptance that if I don’t start now maybe this will never happen. Within hours I received a group email from Kirsten in the Taos based Earthship community enquiring if anyone was going to get started in Africa. This is where this website begins, I have no idea where it will lead, my only hope is that the information that is shared on this website will inspire people in Africa and the rest of the world to start constructing sustainable buildings that are independent of centralised utilities. The governments of this world may not like the idea of a world of independent thinkers but I beleive that is exactly what it will take to survive the accelerating depletion of the worlds resources and the inability of centralised governments to cater for the increasing demand for them. Please pass the details of this website to anyone who may be interested.Better still please add www.earthships.co.za to your email and forum signatures and any other correspondence that may prove useful.Thank you for your assistance in spreading awareness of this valuable subject.
